Don’t blame the referees, though — blame the league leadership. The most basic standard of ethical leadership demands that leaders act with a concern for the good of the whole. By that standard, the handling of the N.F.L.’s labor dispute with its referees has been an epic failure. In response, the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, must step down.
