tiresome/stupid ad in general but
these guys' super embrace of MLK has started to ring so hollow to me. what are the chances the narrator would have been pro sit-ins back in the day?
Yeah it's funny that they said MLK would be disgusted by Rev. Wright, when in reality, if you blind-read most people Rev. Wright quotes on race and MLK quotes on race, they probably wouldn't even be able to pick out who said what without guessing most of the time. MLK has turned into nothing more than a sanitized caricature for bigots and ignoramuses to juxtapose against any black person who speaks out about structural racism today.
"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The "best man" at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade."
- MLK after Barry Goldwater won the GOP nomination, July 16, 1964
"The war has given the extreme right, the anti-labor, anti-Negro, and anti-humanistic forces a weapon of spurious patriotism to galvanize its supporters into reaching for power, right up to the White House. It hopes to use national frustration to take control and restore the America of social insecurity and power for the privileged. When a Hollywood performer, lacking distinction even as an actor can become a leading war hawk candidate for the Presidency, only the irrationalities induced by a war psychosis can explain such a melancholy turn of events."
- Martin Luther King Jr on Vietnam and Ronald Reagan, Nov 1967
I call on the young men of America who must make a choice today to take a stand on this issue. Tomorrow may be too late. The book may close. And don't let anybody make you think that God chose America as his divine, messianic force to be a sort of policeman of the whole world. God has a way of standing before the nations with judgment, and it seems that I can hear God saying to America, "You're too arrogant! And if you don't change your ways, I will rise up and break the backbone of your power, and I'll place it in the hands of a nation that doesn't even know my name. Be still and know that I'm God
- MLK on Vietnam
You can’t talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro without talking about billions of dollars. You can’t talk about ending the slums without first saying profit must be taken out of slums. You’re really tampering and getting on dangerous ground because you are messing with folk then. You are messing with captains of industry… Now this means that we are treading in difficult water, because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong…with capitalism… There must be a better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward a Democratic Socialism.
- MLK, 1967
When Martin Luther King was buried in Atlanta, the live television coverage lasted seven and a half hours. President Johnson announced a national day of mourning. But white conservatives, who absolutely hated him when he was alive, couldn't stop criticizing the event.
South Carolina GOP Sen. Strom Thurmond wrote his constituents, ”We are now witnessing the whirlwind sowed years ago when some preachers and teachers began telling people that each man could be his own judge in his own case.”
Ronald Reagan, the GOP governor of California, argued that King had it coming. He said it was just the sort of “great tragedy that began when we began compromising with law and order, and people started choosing which laws they’d break.”
It's no surprise that Reagan opposed the MLK holiday in 1983. He saw him as nothing but an irrelevant troublemaker. Eventually, the democratic Congress passed the MLK Holiday bill with a veto-proof majority (all 22 "no" votes in the Senate came from republicans)... and Reagan was forced to sign a bill he opposed (while fake-smiling for the cameras, of course)
