Look how Tyrion was out scheming everyone when he was Hand of The King. If his dad, Tywin, didn't snake him, Tyrion would probably be the GOAT HAND OF THE KING.

Robert would've killed the kids and Ned made it very obvious how he felt about killing kids.

Honestly I'm not sure Ned had any good options regardless but trusting Littlefinger and revealing everything to Cersei were terrible decisions. Even if Renly didn't leave the city with his men (50 swords) and pledged to defend Ned, it wouldn't have been enough.
That boy Ned beheaded at the beginning of the series didn't look that much older than Jofferey. Ned was dumb and Robert was dumber

The boy deserted the wall which means he was old enough to have done something to get sent to the wall or signed up to go knowing the penalty for deserting was death. He wasn’t about killing kids just for existing because he would’ve had to kill Jon. Completely different.
Remember, some of those kids was getting sent to the wall on some other shyt. Remember Jons homeboy and how he wound up there

Cersei and Jaime tried to kill Bran twice at that point. Joffrey and Cersei killed the butchers son and forced Ned to kill Lady. Ned was dumb for showing mercy to the Lanisters. Robert was dumber and was never meant to be a ruler
