Since last night people have been shytting on James Franklin, and it made me start thinking. These are the only coaches I'd put ahead of him. Maybe I'd add Lincoln Riley to that list, but it's debatable. Other than that, though, I can't think of any other names I'd put ahead of him.

He is what he is. 9-3 type coach who will be top 15 in recruiting and lose the most important game in the year, sometimes 3 times in the same year.

Pennsylvania is one of the best recruiting grounds and his only in state comp is Pittsburgh. Which has to be taken into account.

Aside from the COVID years, he's got Penn State as a consistent top 10-15 program. He's done a good job there. That record vs top 10 teams is a complete eyesore though.

Great coaches catch heat in all sports when they fail to get it done time and time again. No one said that Franklin isn't a good coach. What we said is that when it comes to big games, his team finds a way to lose them like they did last night. Both things can be true.

I can point to all of those other coaches and tell you what their offensive and defensive philosophy’s are. Dabo’s is just whatever it is the OC/DC runs. Chad Morris, Elliott, and Riley all run different offenses. The difference, at least to me is, Jeff Scott and Elliott setup those recruiting boards and New Springs Baptist funneled the money to the recruits. And since those two left, the recruiting been lacking. Went from like 5-8th to the teens to 25th this past cycle. He can’t Calipari shyt like he used to.

Edit: not that his fault but those playoff appearances came when the ACC was historically terrible. Up until SMU this season, their most impressive competition was UNC 2015 with Marquise Williams at quarterback
