My Cousin Just Told Me the Saddest Thing

My younger cousin is very dark-skinned with kinky hair (which she presses).

Recently, she told me that she wants to marry a white guy--or at least have kids with a white guy--so that her children (especially her daughters) will be light-skinned and have good hair. She tried to justify her statement by saying that many, if not, most black men prefer redbones with "good hair" anyways. So, at the end of the day, she's ultimately producing what a lot of black men desire.

I'm really distressed by her comment. What should I tell her the next time I see her? When she said this to me, I was speechless and had no words.

I want to comfort her, but I don't want to lie to her either.

Tell her that's a petty/fukked up reason to do that. What if the white dude just uses her for a fantasy and she's stuck with the kids created by the man she hates? I know she's not going to think "well at least they got good hair ".

She needs to hear the truth. She might hate you for it but it will sit in the back of her mind and she just may remember what you tell her at the right time.

Maybe she needs more education on how to style it so that doing it up is easier, or so that she learns better styles that look good on her. Things like that, I imagine.
