Michigan State University confirmed that celebrated track and field athlete Tony Martin died over the weekend, reportedly shot to death early Sunday at a Saginaw gas station.
The incident was a double homicide that also claimed the life of a 22-year-old who was with Martin, but little is known beyond that. No motive is known.
The shooting was reported at 2 a.m. Sunday at a Sunoco Gas Station, 1944 E. Genesee Ave.
MSU's track and field program offered condolences about the 19-year-old, as did many others from the world of sports.
He was called a legend.
One of his jumps covered the length of the seventh longest jump in the world.
Mile Split USA reported: "Martin's young track and field career was just beginning to blossom after a record breaking senior season for Saginaw High School in 2019, where he won his first Michigan State LP-2 state championship and secured a wind-legal and remarkable long jump best of 26 feet, 6 inches in April of last year."
