A motorcyclist who Newark police said fled a University of Delaware police traffic stop late Tuesday night is accused of hitting and killing a UD freshman and injuring four others.
The freshman was an 18-year-old New Jersey woman. Her name is not being released by police until her family has been notified. UD's president and vice president issued a statement Wednesday afternoon calling for the school to support one another.
"Late last night, a first-year University of Delaware student died in a traffic accident near campus, which was witnessed by many of her friends and classmates," President Dennis Assanis and Vice President José-Luis Riera's statement began. "Incidents such as this are unimaginably tragic. We cannot express enough how sorry we are for the family, friends, and greater community as we are all so deeply shaken by the sudden loss of one of our own. Our hearts are very heavy today."
The statement added the school must come together and lean on one another "and to do so with extra kindness and empathy." Support and assistance is available to students who need it, according to the statement.
The motorcyclist, whom police have not yet identified, "disregarded the police officer’s emergency lights and fled at a high rate of speed." They continued west on East Main Street.
"The University of Delaware police officer did not engage in a pursuit with the motorcycle and extinguished his emergency lights when the motorcycle fled at a high rate of speed," a news release said.
As the biker sped away, they hit the 18-year-old woman, who was crossing on West Main Street, just west of North College Avenue. The driver was ejected, while the motorcycle continued on.
The vehicle hit four additional pedestrians and a light pole.
Bystanders tried to save the young woman in the crosswalk, but they were unable to and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The other four pedestrians suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Only one was taken to the hospital.
The motorcyclist was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They have not been charged "at this time," police said, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Classes at UD began Tuesday.
