The anime influence took over i think because it was much more cost effective than the traditional disney style/ wb style animations we used to do.
Anime will literally have still frames for 10 seconds where barely anything moves but the characters mouth.
ex
Much easier to draw a mouth opening and closing than animating the enitre scene.

that fluidity takes much longer to animate than the above
