Morris Brown College Partners With The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Of Georgia
March 1, 2022

Morris Brown College (MBC) is proud to announce it has partnered with the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia to offer its members (Order of the Eastern Stars {OES} included) the opportunity to complete their college education at little to low cost
. Morris Brown is also elated to announce its reinstatement to participate in the Federal Financial Aid Program administered by the United States Department of Education.

This announcement comes on the heels of receiving accreditation candidacy by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS), a Virginia-based accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This monumental achievement came after nearly 20 years of effort, marking a historical milestone for the 141-year-old college.

Prince Hall Freemasonry is the oldest and largest (300,000+ initiated members) predominantly African American fraternity in the world. Rev. James M. Simms, who served as a District Deputy Grand Master, established Eureka Lodge, No. 1, F. & A. M. in Savannah in 1866. Several other lodges were formed, and in 1870, he organized the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Georgia Free and Accepted Masons. Rev. James M. Simms was elected to serve as its first Grand Master. The Grand Lodge went on to charter more than 500 lodges with more than 20,000 members.

A member of the Prince Hall Masonic Fraternity himself, President Kevin James said, “I am elated to partner with Grand Master Corey Shackleford, Sr. in this initiative. With the restoration of Morris Brown College as the most affordable HBCU in Atlanta, what better way than to offer this wonderful opportunity.

Moreover, the members get to be a part of the historic resurrection story while earning their degrees simultaneously. Through this partnership, all eligible financially active members in Georgia will receive automatic admissions to Morris Brown College to major in programs such as business, psychology, music, hospitality, general studies, and esports. Moreover, the institution is now a viable option to everyone as we are historically a haven for all hungry souls.”

Grand Master Corey Shackleford, Sr. stated, “This partnership with Morris Brown is right on time as we continue to press Freemasonry forward in Georgia. The Prince Hall Masonic Lodge on Auburn Avenue (formerly our Grand East/HQs) recently received a grant that will provide funding for a preservation plan to guide the restoration of the building’s character and condition.

Moreover, recently the Grand Lodge of Georgia and the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia agreed to grant mutual recognition, further strengthening Georgia Freemasonry. Education being the root of many of these endeavors, this partnership is so meaningful. These are historic times.

Founded by formerly enslaved religious leaders at Big Bethel AME Church in 1881, MBC is the first college in Georgia to be owned and operated by African Americans. The iconic Fountain Hall and the current Morris Brown Campus are where Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois wrote “The Souls of Black Folk” in 1903. Notable alumni include Alberta Williams King, mother of Martin Luther King, Jr., and James Alan McPherson, the first Black writer to win a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

I guess this is a good thing. However, to me it seems that it would be more impactful if MB partnered with an Atlanta area high school and offered little to low cost to its graduates that wanted to attend.

But any door that makes higher education more accessible to black people will always be a good thing.

Masons were at the top of the food pyramid back in the day before the Divine Nine came on the scene. Their influence has waned much over the years. To my knowledge, we didn’t have any Masons in our family. Older members opted to join the Colored Knights of Pythias. We’ve had a few Eastern Stars though.

Interesting.
In discussions about the future of HBCUs , many people said they would either have to consolidate or specialize. I think MB is going to move towards attracting older adults starting or completing degrees.
In the time when they were down, the profiles of the other AUC schools have risen. They probably won't be able to field athletic teams for another 7 years. Going to be hard to recruit area high school students when other options are right in front of them.

I think this partnership with Prince Hall chapter is a hint of what their niche is going to be moving forward. Adult learning. Courses suited to working professionals.

I'd forgotten that Prince Hall Masons were formed before Sigma Pi Phi and the college organizations.
The organizations you named, were they formed in the mid West? Is Prince Hall more prevalent in Northeast corridor where it was formed?

As kids, there were neighbors that we'd see wearing fezzes and lodge attire from time to time. We called them Grand Poo Bahs because of the father character in Happy Days.

Good info OP.

Though this brings three of the six things together that the coli hates. HBCUs, educated black people and Black Masons. :wow:

That just leaves out the other three things the coli hates single women, single mothers and children. :wow:

Thanks.
We had a Mason side discussion when we delivering the eulogy to Lawrence Otis Graham about one year ago.

MS?
You just described every lodge and social club in Newark, NJ. In fact, most people reading this are laughing thinking about how it applies to their area.

I bought a hot plate at a fish fry sponsored by one of those lodges a few Summers ago. Little did I know then that I was (secretly) bankrolling Illuminati .

I think I missed the anti-Black Mason rhetoric here, but most negativity here is caused by people that are unhappy. The target changes daily, but the unhappiness will never go away.

People really hate children here? I thought that was just a Michael Jordan meme.,
heheheh

A menber posted this in response to someone talking about the importance of HBCUs

At first but what have they done for blacks in the last 50 years other than create a black bourgeoise that had looked down on other black communities

Won't name the member, because I don't want to contribute to negativity, but this was some wild shyt to read.

If it keeps the lights on, then it's a win for college. They were almost permanently closed just a few short years ago.
