WWE changed its plans for the main event of Survivor Series by putting CM Punk, Ryback and John Cena in a triple threat for the WWE Title in part because there was concern that the Survivor Series-style match that was originally planned would draw low PPV buyrate numbers. However, it turns out that this isn't the only reason, as Vince McMahon was reportedly impressed by the buyrate for Hell in a Cell.

McMahon is said to have credited Ryback for the numbers, which were said to be "surprisingly strong" particularly in regard to DirecTV, and wanted to capitalize on the new main eventer's momentum. It was believed that he would not benefit as much from the ten-man match as he would form a triple threat, which resulted in the new match being made.
