After listening to some of Havocs old beats I decided to see if I could pitch down a piano and make it sound remotely decent, heres what I come up with. Ive been making beats for a while now but just not consistently as you could probably tell, just wanted some decent feedback

much props in advance :francis:

heres what i sampled at 45:43

Had you just uploaded the beat and said "What do you think?" Im certain a lot of people would have said it sounds mobb deepish. So if thats what inspired you or what you were drawing from congrats. Other than that, pay attention to the drums, I think the kick fit well but the snare was dry and had too much reverb. Keep it up tho.

You have a well trained ear.... If this was someone else's beat I wouldn't have even realised there was reverb on the snare. How can you tell?

i make beats frequently and one of the things i pay attention to is snares, theres only a few times ive actually been satisfied with the ones ive used. you can have a weak melody and kick but have a snare that snaps for like a boom bap type beat and it will bring the entire beat up and youll actually have heat, then there are times when the kick and the melody are dope especially if its sampled and you can hide a snare or not have a really good sounding snare but it'll be subtle under everything else that is dope. otherwise you can have a dope kick pattern dope sample and air it out with some hats and they will float the snare and the whole beat will sound good.

the absolute answer to all of these whether you can a weak snare for a boom bap, a dope kick and fly melody or dope kick, sample and hats and just a snare is mixing. if the mix is good you can hide a lot of flaws to your own personal ear to whether a particular part (kick, snare, hat) doesnt sound right.

i'll listen to someone like 9th wonder or madlib who have a couple beats that are just kick and snare over a melody and the snare isnt anything special but everything else is so dope, then dr dre who in my opinion has some dope snares and honestly his beats are very complex its just the mastering and the realness of the instrumentation that is used. to try to overcome this nagging obsession i have with snares i will listen to bands (radiohead) and just listen to the drum beats, thats how i developed my ear of hearing reverb, attack, delay, sustain, release, chorus and a few other effects.

you got any other beats?

Props, one thing I find I am very weak in is mixing, mad tedious of course but has to be done. After reading RZAs new book and he talks about snares at certain frequencies clashing with other sounds I realized how deep this mixing shyt is, I need to start listening to beats with more attention to detail, im very black and white when listening to things like drums

heres one I did a few weeks back

heres a track I did back when I was trying to use no samples

and a personal favourite of mine, this is when I finally got the hang of sampling properly

mixing is good, but if you have a dope concept or just like to churn out beats it's not necessary until it's time to sell them or so. i used to make 1 - 3 whenever i turned my mpc on and would make beats 3 or 4 times a week, just to practice shyt and grow. if i mastered each and every one id never get any others done. just have fun with it.

mystery is dope, the others ones are good, but mystery is really dope.

I was looking at mpc recently and am deciding whether or not I really need one, considering I can do it all on fl studio. What are the real benefits of an mpc... Does it make chopping samples that much easier? Quicker to make beats?

i am an equipment head. I love going to pawn shops and music stores and playin with gear, whether guitars, drum machines, keyboards. its an extension of me going to record shops back when i used to dig in crates. So I like equipment personally, theres a big an interesting culture with it. having to work within its parameters.

i wouldnt necessarily have as much fun as a person getting into music switching from reason to fl studio although they are intriguing and fun too. i used reason before I could afford gear. using reason is what got me using gear because they have virtual racks and such then i bought a midi keyboard and started buying actual equipment.

i feel for more of a hands on approach to music equipment is good and useful, and nowadays you can integrate a lot of older equipment with reason and fl studio one way or another. so where each other used to have limits, it's kind of limitless, you just have to be creative.

you definitely dont need it. equipment is not a necessity. especially for reason and fl studios where you can map keys to your keyboard, if it's that easy why use anything else?

a long time ago I worked and used a computer frequently so the last thing I wanted to do was come home and be in front of a computer or laptop, so my keyboard and mpc 2kxl was the way for me.

This beat is really dope man!
It really sounds very Mobb Deep-ish.
Although i would pick a different snare and put a Reverb on it with a longer tail. Cause that's what Havoc would do.

thanks bruh, you guys may be right, the more I hear it the more I notice the snare standing out too much ... would be an ill snare to have in another beat though, maybe my next one :ehh:

Not the first time I heard the comparison ... a few people have told me my drums are 9th wonder style

yep, that's a typical 9th Wonder snare. But the vibe of the track overall is more Havoc.
I mean a snare with a long tail of reverb can make it sound extra spooky.
