MMA is applying for Olympic recognition, Mirror Fighting can exclusively reveal.

As the Rio Olympics are under starter's orders new martial arts have already been confirmed for Tokyo in 2020.


Now it is confirmed that Karate will join Taekwondo, Judo, boxing and fencing in the Olympic pantheon of martial arts and wrestling will also return.

UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta said: "The Olympics are a business and they want to attract those younger viewers for all these big television deals.

I was watching Olympic Judo and part of me was thinking how MMA would work if it were in the Olympics. Boxing is 3 rounds. Judo is 5 minutes. Maybe one 6 minute round? What happens if the winner of the fight is injured and can't make it to the next round? Forfeit win for his next opponent?

Boxing eliminated headgear for international tournaments so I don't think MMA would be beholden to requiring headgear.
