I got a large collection of homemade blu rays that I converted to mkv and put on an external hd. I normally just run an audio and video cable from my laptop to my tv which works great but then I can't use my laptop for anything else.

Is there any cheap hardware that has hdmi and component outputs that would allow me to plug in my external and play video straight from that to my tv?

someone can correct me if i'm wrong but WDTV actually does this but I don't actually have one so someone let me know if it works for MKV files (i would think it does)

I personally rock a NAS (network attached storage) + AppleTV2 (jailbreak)

The wdtv does indeed play mkv files. I have a wdtv live hub and two wdtv live players and it runs the files flawlessly.

think if you want to stream to multiple players/tvs...if its one to one, only need a player and either stream to player or hard wire to a hard drive (depends on the type of player you get - think the LIVE model allows streaming)

My bad for the miscommunication, you just need the live player. I've got all of those devices in order to network them and stream the content from the hub in the living room to the live players in the bedrooms.

If your laptop doesn't need to move to hook up to the tv, just change the monitor settings to span instead of clone and drag the video window to the tv. Then you're free to use the laptop for whatever else.
