Thats why the hiphop genre gets clowned on, the science is this :

When DJ Clue,Absolute,Flex and them where dropping mixtapes that was all piff. A Rapper can drop a 16 or give em a new track before it drops that was lovely but 2012 and for the last 6 to 7 years shyt has flipped.

If you a new artist and have dropped like 4 or 5 mixtapes before your debut album you fcked up, each mixtape maybe 15 tracks with maybe 3 verses, thats like 45 verses .... what else you got to say ?

Why would someone pick up your shyt, I am from the era where your bars where your swords you swing the Excalibur, Heavyweight bar spitters call them 'darts' .... Jay,Nas,Em or any top tier MC will never do a mixtape because you are over saturating your commodity (lyrics)

These clowns running around with 5 mixtapes spitting all types of verses, you have lost value before your debut.

X got on by features, then his debut got him shine.
Big Pun got on by features, then his debut got him shine.
Mase,Nas,etc

Which dumb ass A&R is co-signing artist dropping mixtapes, if you have a mixtape automatically im not going to listen to you .... you proved you dont value your bars.

So as you see now, Top Rappers dont wanna be associated with Rap, media dont respect it no more .... and its easy to tell why (after g-unit/dipset) the whole Rap shyt took a nose dive because these guys just yap yap no poetic bars no nothing.

Mixtapes are too blame.

Are yall with me ? Lets put a stop to this mixtape and let DJ Green Lantern,Clue,KaySLay do what they do ..... shyt is so sad.

I don't really respect it because the way "mixtapes" have evolved. Old mixtapes had blending and scratching. The DJ was important. Mixtapes these days are just free albums.

Thats what i am saying "mixtapes" aint the same DJ hosting a cut of blends and freestyles etc, now its like a promo tool .... but its backward you are just losing the appeal of the artist by letting him rock a bunch of tracks.

I be more inclined to listen to a new rapper, if there where only like 5 or 6 verses available, not 100 of songs ......... no value in the album and it cheapens the lyrics/song making.

What do you think of the Jay Electronica approach?

Much better but you picked the wrong guy to compare him to me, because i think his an a$$hole and is scared to fail so thats his whole lane ... wants people to think his better than he is.

But to me if you are prepared to waste like 45 verses on some run of the mill tape, then you have nothing worth of value to ever listened too. Theres way too many mixtapes, i say leave it to the real mixtape DJs.

Thats why the top rappers distance themselves from rap music, you cant sort the shyt from the sugar. OD on these tapes man, especially since as a rapper your trade/craft is the power of your words.

I don't like the modern day mixtapes with original songs, it takes away excitement for the album. If I'm getting 2 mixtapes a year with original songs why would I care about the album.

I used to cop mixtapes like every week back in 04'. Good example Joe budden(mood muzik series) papoose(from 04 to 06 epic) big krit (krit was here, return of 4eva, and 4eva and a day) Kendrick (overly dedicated, my God section 80, and black hippies). Had some of the best bars/production on those tapes. They put some their greatest material on mixtapes. If a good 90% of that was just saved for albums shyt would be ground breaking. I would say in this climent the greatest shyt is constantly either over looked or put out for free. And most nikkas wouldnt even give krit or Kendrick a listen even if it is handed to them. We have too much access to free shyt that we take for granted. And we know too much about artist/mixtapes and albums way before they drop. The more we know the less its valued in my opinion.

I see where you're going with this and to an extent I agree...

I think that for most artists, there is a limit to the amount of quality music they can produce (similar to the number of minutes an athlete can play before their skills decline).

And if someone is putting out 3-4 mixtapes before they drop an actual release, they have already used up their quality and their skills are starting to diminish.

It's an issue with quantity over quality...and pretty soon (like it is now), the market is flooded with mediocre music and there is an overall lack of good, quality music.

That's the position that I feel like we're at right now with hiphop...

Mixtapes put up-and-coming artists in the position to drop albums. Simple as that.

Take away Weezy, Kanye and Jay-Z.....now you have Drake, Cudi and J. Cole trying to get on. Are features on remixes and stuff goin to pave the way for them to collect plaques? No way. They wouldn't be in the position they're in (again, take away co-signs) without SFG, The Warm Up/The Come Up and AKNC.

Once you're on though, there's no need to release mixtapes constantly anymore besides making more hits to perform at clubs and concerts.

Ross, Wayne, The Game.... say what you want about their material, they're releasing those numerous tapes for the fans.

Bottom line it's hard to justify spending 10-15 dollars on an album when the free mixtape is twice as good. And it definitely doesn't help that the best songs from the tape are on the album.

I disagree, The Game no longer has a top spot and one reason is because he is spitting a 1000 bars on tapes and no one is eager to hear what he has to say. Wayne no longer is critiqued for his bars his now giggling on tracks and singing, Ross is from the south and still doing that mixtape thats why he will never be a major player like cross over media appeal.

If i hear a stand out verse from a new rapper i would only need a couple more, to take a vested interest in his album .... but if he has 1000s of verses on a mixtape, he lets me know he does not have a heart for this or does not value his bars/lyricism.

less is more
supply and demand

If people want to hear your shyt, they will itunes your singles or buy your LP. If you release a mixtape im looking at you like a cheap artist and already further know you going to be spitting a bunch of blah blah rhymes so i dont even care to hear that yet alone an LP.

MCs need to take pride in their bars/music so why flood the streets with lackluster trash, and save your best foot for your LP.

MC's no longer have a prestige because from youtube rhymers to college cheerleaders everybody can rap, but what are you really saying ? and if you have a 1000 raps before an LP then you pretty much not saying anything of note.
