Trainer: Adrien Broner must start early vs. Marcos Maidana
January 12, 2014
Richard Schaefer said that Adrien “The Problem” Broner has exercised his rematch option for a return bout with Marcos Maidana, Broner's trainer, Mike Stafford, insists he knows what the Cincinnati-based fighter has to do to regain his WBA welterweight title.

Maidana (35-3, 31 knockouts ) floored Broner (27-1, 22 KOs) once each in the second and eighth rounds of a brutally physical unanimous decision victory on Dec. 14 on Showtime at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Broner could face Maidana as early as April 19 or April 26 at either the Alamodome or the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., which was a sellout for Maidana's sixth-round stoppage of Josesito Lopez in June of last year.

When they meet for the second time, Stafford said that Broner must not only dictate the pace earlier in the fight, but also sustain his offensive attack against Maidana, a 30-year-old whose relentless pressure, accurate punching and brawling and mauling style proved to be too much for his 24-year-old adversary.

Maidana landed 120 more overall punches (269-to-149) than Broner (27-1, 22 KOs), connected on 109 more power shots (231-to-122), and 11 more jabs (38-to-27). Maidana also punished Broner downstairs, where the Argentine connected on 101 body blows, according to statistics provided by Showtime statisticians.

"You know, Adrien, we're going to do it, this time," said Stafford of Broner, who lost 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109 on the cards of Judges Stanley Christodoulou, Nelson Vazquez and Levi Martinez, respectively.

"This time, Adrien can do it if he does early like he did in the later rounds. If Adrien starts out in the fight like he did in the later rounds, then he wins the fight. He can't have the second and eighth rounds. The second and the eighth rounds killed him."

Within a week of the fight's completion, Stafford said, "We knew that he was going to be strong for six or seven rounds, but we had him out a few times," adding, "Adrien just didn't pull the trigger. Definitely in the 11th round. I thought that maybe we could have had him out in the 12th."

Stafford also lamented another moment in the eighth, during which Maidana was penalized for what referee Laurence Cole called a fllagrant and deliberate intention to hurt somebody outside of the rules of boxing.

"He got elbowed and there were different things…It wasn't no bad night, it was a bad first round…I had to settle him down because he had never been in that territory before," said Stafford. "He had never gotten hit like that, and when he did get hit like that, it was like, 'I want to retaliate and make it a street fight'…He's good, and he'll be back."

Nothing Stafford said changes my opinion that Chino is going to win again.

Hopefully they work on stamina and letting his hands go/keeping them up. PLUS, keeping his distance and jabbing alot more. I really see Maidana coming with the exact same strategy in the rematch and if Broner/Stafford prepares for it, the should be able to be victorious.

We already seen the best of Marcos Maidana. Like Floyd Sr said, he fights the same way every time out. Aint nothing special to watch for:manny:

Maidana is the bigger man, hell, didnt Broner weigh in at 144 lbs for the fight:what:

He's not a big WW, so I dont think he can just stand in front of Maidana and attempt to trade power shots again. He has to jab, go to the body, mix up the attack, and keep his guard up for the over the top right/left hands. That's all Maidana was landing, and it hurt AB over and over again, because he didnt keep his hands up

If Broner's opponent is not aggressive then he looks good; if his opponent is effectively aggressive then he goes into a shell of inactivity for long periods of the fight.
I expect the same thing in the rematch.

That's true.

I fully expect Maidana to fight the exact same way as he did in the 1st fight and attempt to maul/brawl with Broner. It's gonna be up to Broner to adjust to that, especially when he knows what's coming. There's no reason for Maidana to switch up his gameplan when he had the perfect plan and it worked with great success.

Bingo. If you look at the fight's with DeLeon, Malignaggi, and Maidana, they all out threw jabs and power punches in most if not all the rounds.

I don't think Broner looked good in any of those fights and could have arguably lost the 2 before the Maidana fight. The only reason I think he didn't loose against both DeLeon and Malingnaggi is because they didn't posses the punching power Maidana has. As long as Maidana keeps the mentality of going in there and taking care of business, I see him winning again.

Lol, but you know Broner is gonna do all he can to get in his head. That's half his strategy for all his fights it seems.

:leon:Broner got my respect for taking the immediate rematch. Most young fighters and their camps would have blatantly ducked Maidana in this spot.

Why would Marcos Maidana change up? His gameplan was perfect and he executed it to the "T":ohhh:

What does he need to adjust or switch?

To think his opponent wouldn't switch up gameplans would be dumb man c'mon.
Plus he's got Garcia in his corner now.

I smell another ass whipping brehs :smugbiden:

A few things came out of that fight for me.

It proved Broner is not a full fledged Welter and can't hang with power puncher at that weight. He also makes fundamental mistakes that "maybe" he can make adjustments in with a 2 1/2 month training camp, but conventional wisdom is telling me Broner (to his credit I suppose) is gonna wanna really beat Maidana and prove himself, but he's gonna catch another bad one in the process. He just doesn't throw enough when he needs to. Crazy to say at 23-24 yrs old, but it's a crossroads fight for Broner already

Broner got this...

All he gotta do is Jab, throw body punches, use lateral movement, head movement, increase his punch output, don't trade with Maidana, don't get hit with big shots, don't stand in the pocket not throwing punches, stay off the ropes, N stay away from the overhand right N looping left hook
