Denver boxer Mike Alvarado was arrested downtown early Saturday on a felony warrant and suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon after officers found a handgun in the glove box of his Hummer during a traffic stop.
The Hummer was stopped by police about 4:15 a.m. near the intersection of 19th and Stout streets after an officer found the car to have expired registration. Alvarado, a world champion who is scheduled to fight later this month, was sitting in the vehicle's passenger seat.
Police say Alvarado, 34, appeared to be pushing something into the glove box when they approached the car, court records show. Officers ran a records check on Alvarado and found he was wanted on a felony warrant and a traffic offense out of Adams County.
Officers arrested Alvarado and then searched his car, finding a Taurus handgun inside the glove box, records show.
Alvarado was read his rights and declined to speak with police before he was taken to jail on the felony weapons charge, according to an arrest affidavit.
The arresting officer wrote in the affidavit that "due to my previous contacts with the defendant, I knew him to be a convicted felon."
Records show he posted $41,500 bond and has been released.
Alvarado, who has a lengthy criminal record, fights in the light welterweight and welterweight division and has been ranked internationally. The Denver boxer, who is famous for fighting and infamous for his mix ups with the law, is regarded as a hometown product who once trained near Coors Field.
Alvarado last fought in May 2014 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif.,
losing by a unanimous decision to Juan Manuel Marquez and falling to 34-3 as a pro with 23 knockouts. The former Colorado high school wrestling champion and former World Boxing Organization junior welterweight champion is known as a tenacious, strong fighter.
Alvarado is scheduled to fight Brandon Rios on Jan. 24 at the FirstBank Center in Broomfield, in a nationally-televised bout on HBO. It will be the third fight against the two in a highly-touted trilogy.
In their second bout, in 2013 in Las Vegas, Alvarado won a unanimous decision over Rios to earn the WBO junior welterweight world title. He then lost the title last year to Ruslan Provodnikov in Broomfield.
The Alvarado-Rios fight has not been affected by Alvarado's arrest, Henry Delgado, Alvarado's longtime manager, told The Denver Post.
"There's no problem with the fight," said Delgado. "As long as he's out. And he's been bailed out. The fight's only in a few weeks. I don't see that being a problem.
"But after that, I don't know."
In January 2014, a late-model Cadillac Escalade associated with Alvarado and believed to be involved in a downtown Denver hit-and-run was
slid into Sloan's Lake by a male driver who fled on foot. He was not charged in connection.
Court records show he was also arrested during a traffic stop on the same weapons charge in Adams County in October of 2013.
"He's just with the wrong people in the wrong places sometimes," Delgago said.
