WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has come out swinging, verbally, after a recent interview conducted by his former promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank.
Last Thursday, Cotto officially announced that he signed a promotional agreement with Roc Nation Sports. Arum, and Top Rank President Todd duBoef, were very upset with the way everything played out.
Top Rank had promoted Cotto from the start of his career until December 2011, when the boxer's contract expired and he officially became a free agent. He was recently working with them on a fight by fight basis.
Duboef claimed Cotto and his legal adviser, Gaby Penagaricano, cut off all communication by not responding to emails, calls and texts for several weeks. Arum dug in a little deeper, claiming Cotto "swore on his father (who is deceased)" that he would remain with Top Rank for the remainder of his career. Arum said Cotto was "no longer a man" for not making good on that promise.
Cotto denies that he ever promised Arum anything about maintaining a working relationship with his company.
"First of all, you can ask Bob Arum....following the end of our contract in February 2011 he and I never sat down to talk or discuss anything related to a fight. Every single time I sat down [to discuss my future plans with someone at Top Rank I sat down] with Todd duBoef. So all I have left to say is that the man is a big liar. I have nothing to say to Bob Arum. He never gave me anything. What I have is a product of my own effort. The money that Mr. Bob Arum invested in Miguel Cotto was money that he recovered ten folds," Cotto told El Vocero.
"This is a business and from the day I signed with them in 2001, I was a business in the eyes of Top Rank. Here's what's bothering them (Todd and Bob), they are no longer going to see anything [from me]."
Cotto then claimed that he discovered some sort of scheme, but refused to elaborate to the paper on what he was talking about.
"One plus one equals two in any language. They think I'm a moron, but I'm not," Cotto said. "They spent years doing the same practice. It has happened to three boxers who have realized that.. Oscar de la Hoya, [Floyd] Mayweather Jr., and now Miguel Cotto. With all three - it was the same situation with the same common denominator."
