Felt the same way, kind of the same experience I also had with Mud. Jeff Nichols is like an inch removed from capturing that one thing that pushes his movies from good to great (I actually would call Take Shelter a great movie, but after his last two movies that one starts to feel more and more like Nichols just hit the perfect storm, no pun intended). Anyway, this felt a lot like No Country For Aliens. I liked how the story dropped us right in the middle, but I thought Nichols didn't do a good enough job following up on it by never really revealing what preceded (specifically, Tomlin's past on "The Ranch"). I think the lack of such character building details (same for Lucas, who gets like two sentences of exposition to explain why he's there) kept the movie from becoming engrossing.
