Former Michigan wing Charles Matthews has reportedly suffered a serious injury in the lead-up to the 2019 NBA draft.

Matthews tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a predraft workout with the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN.

According to Matthews' agent, Adam Pensack, Matthews will have surgery in Chicago, his hometown.

"Injuries are tough, but Charles is an extremely hard worker and will be back stronger than ever," Pensack told ESPN. "He had a series of outstanding workouts lately and has helped himself. Charles will continue that momentum when he returns to action. As of now, we have interest in the second round as Charles is OK signing a two-way contract like Edmond Sumner did with the Indiana Pacers in 2017."

The draft is June 20.

Matthews, who graduated from Michigan this past year and declared early for the draft, was considered one of the top defenders in the draft pool, and was regarded as a potential second-round pick.

He was one of three players to declare following this past season, along with Ignas Brazdeikis and Jordan Poole.

Matthews, who tested the draft waters in the summer of 2018 but chose to return to Michigan, was a team captain this past season. He was the team's third-leading scorer, averaging 12.2 points, 5 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
