Maybe we're reading this wrong.

He tried to Be Like Mike 4 years before MJ was even drafted. Michael Jackson was a prophet.

He even said "I will be magic". Magic had just been drafted in 1979 and was becoming the face of the league. He knew MJ would come and take over.
