That Jackson 5 mini series was cool, but it was a basic made for tv movie
Malcolm X was a cinematic achievement. The acting, directing, and writing was another level
Your comparing too different mediums which is an argument in bad taste
For a tv miniseries, The Jacksons: An American Dream is one of the greatest of all time, and thats no bullshyt. Excellent performances from the entire cast. The film that put Terrence Howard, Jason Weaver, and Monica Calhoun on the map. Anchored by phenomenal performances from Angela Bassett and Lawrence Hilton Jacobs. It was well written, well directed, and the musical performances still hold up (particularly by Weaver and Draper)
Malcolm X is a feature film bankrolled by a major studio and even when they pulled funding, Spike was able to secure the assistance of the likes of Oprah, Magic Johnson, Janet Jackson, and Denzel himself to get funding to continue making the film. Its a work by an auteur at the height of his creative powers executing a vision centered around the performance of one of the greatest actors whose ever lived (himself in his prime)
The Jacksons at the time, worked better as a miniseries than a film. I myself suggested that Michael’s story would serve better as an epic HBO 4 part series than a 2 hour film. But a film is what we’re getting and it would be only right if someone as magnetic, complex, and controversial as Michael Jackson get either a 4 hour, Titanic style epic or a two part film so that nothing feels rushed or short changed.
One thing i’m worried about is the reports that the reshoots are to address the fact that the estate doesn’t want the 1993 allegations to be part of the film. Something like that could derail the “authenticity” of the film because, for better or worse, its a major part of Jackson’s public and personal downfall. EVERYBODY knows it, and to not address it would feel phony.
