MEXICO CITY, July 25 – Mexican drug kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the co-founder of the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel, is in U.S. custody, two sources familiar with the operation told Reuters on Thursday.

Zambada founded the Sinaloa Cartel along with now-jailed drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and he faces a litany of indictments for crimes relating to drug trafficking and organized crime in the United States.

U.S. federal prosecutors in February charged Zambada with conspiracy to manufacture and distribute fentanyl, which U.S. officials say is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45.

I am fukking shocked.

Mayo's son runs things now --but they made a deal

They turned themselves in. This is a major political play. Mayo's is like 77 years old. The Chapito kid.....he must be willing to give them his half brother IVAN. maybe do 10 years or so.

Justice had a press release ready to go. obviously coordinated surrender. This is high high level games being played. Vicente's Mayos kid has been a US witness for over 15 years.

This close to an election? right after Biden drops out. This is a historic "win" for the US government. Mayo will die in prison though. Did he do this for his son? or what can they offer him? He will never never see Mexico again. IVAN has to factor in here. Mexico just wrapped elections.

IVAN calls them LOS DEA's

and in 20 years his son will do the same. and the US will say we are winning the war on drugs.

Apparently el chapo’s son made a deal.

Sources familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly about the arrests previously told The Times that Zambada had somehow been fooled into boarding the plane that brought him to U.S. soil.

“Epic, once-in-a-lifetime caper,” one law enforcement source who works in Mexico said of Zambada’s arrest. “The old man got tricked.”

According to Perez, who spoke briefly with The Times after issuing the statement, Zambada was set up by being called to a meeting with Guzmán López, a leader of the cartel faction known as Los Chapitos.

Zambada — known for his elusiveness after more than four decades on the run without capture — was traveling with a relatively light security detail, Perez said.

Caught off guard, Zambada was overpowered, the lawyer said.

I would say take all that info in, but ask yourself, does it really make a lot of sense?

knowing what I know about someone like Mayo, it's not really plausible. Old. Sick. Lots of people invested in his well being. No need to look at properties. he has dozens and dozens of people. Paranoid. Rarely leaves his little village.

knowing what I know about the US government and politicians, it's in their interest to make this seem like at least 1/2 of a major capture and a not a deal. For political reasons.

for Mayo's reasons, it's part pride and ego, but also artifice, to disguise that he made a deal. Consider all three of his sons cooperated with the Justice Department. All three. and 2 of those sons are still US witnesses and live here. moved their families here on visas issued through the Justice Department. his own brother is a protected witness in the US.

and think of the sources that are pushing this narrative, narcos aren't saying it, Mexican politicians aren't saying it, sources in the federal governmenbt are saying it. off the record. if it truly went down that way, his arrest may not even be legal.

consider the other sources, his attorney Frank Perez, a heavy hitter big dog lawyer with deep political connections in El Paso, where the indictment is filed. The guy's website advertises OFAC cases and even references Mayo's son in a fukking commercial. So MZ got flown here against his will, doesn't speak ANY english, is in a wheel chair, wakes up in the US, and hires the BEST lawyer in El Paso for his arraignment? The same day or the next day.

and yeah I read too that they beat him and tied him and flew him here. nah nah. that's not what happened. They made a deal.

and in fact his lawyer, that showed up less than 24 hours later, is the same who worked out his sons cooperation agreement.

Very cool, very legal

@re'up

had to sound like a conspiracy theoroist, still can't buy this story

not the timing of it
not the circumstances
not the optics

not the idea that they flew into El Paso where Mayo has a pending indictment from 2012, but also, has the same lawyer his son used for his cooperation agreement.

The fact that US law enforcement won't go on the record about what went down

it's one thing for annom sources to say whatever and speculate because they weren't even on the operation

it's a different thing for the Justice Department to straight up lie

the fact they are leaking the pictures to frame the narrative. it's masterful. They aren't really even lying. but why would feds leak that many pics? They are the only ones who would have taken them.
