Mellody Hobson, one of the most respected and knowledgeable black business leaders, will move up to the role of vice chair at Starbucks when longtime chairman Howard Schultz steps down at the end of the month.

After Starbucks’ tumultuous year, marked with the scandal of the arrest of two black men at one of its Philadelphia stores, Howard Schultz announced today that he will be relinquishing his role as chairman at the company he has run for the past three decades. While Myron E. Ullman, the former chairman of J.C. Penney, will take over as the company’s new chairman, Hobson, who has been a director on the board, will now take over the role of vice chair, making her one of the very few African Americans in history to occupy such a role at a Fortune 500 company.

Hobson, 49, joined Ariel Investments, LLC, the largest African American-owned money manager in the United States as an intern in 1999. She rose through the ranks, becoming the president of the investment firm with $13 billion asset under management. Under her leadership, Ariel Investments was named No.1 on the BE Asset Managers list in 2003.

“She has a grace and graciousness about her that is singular,” Jeffrey Katzenberg, the former CEO of DreamWorks Animation, who had worked with Hobson, told Vanity Fair in 2015. “She is remarkably unique. She’s a stunning person. I get a little nervous talking about her because the words are so flowery. But it’s truly how I feel about her.”

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, who credits a comment Hobson made with inspiring her to write her best-seller, Lean In, recalled her saying, “she wanted to be unapologetically black and unapologetically a woman.”

“My life was altered by meeting her, and that’s not something I say lightly,” Sandberg said. “She is such a big part of my path taken. I think she does that for everyone.”

Beyond her work at Ariel Investments, Hobson is a nationally recognized voice on financial literacy and investor education. She has been a financial contributor on Good Morning America, the featured consumer finance expert on Tom Joyner’s Money Mondays radio program, and a regular columnist for Black Enterprise.

Hobson has also been a director at a number of public companies and institutions: DreamWorks Animation, GroupOn, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., and Starbucks Corporation. She has also served on the boards of various civic organizations including the Field Museum, the Chicago Public Education Fund, and the Sundance Institute. She was the first African American woman to head The Economic Club of Chicago. And she was elected to JP Morgan Chase’s board of directors in March.

Born in Chicago, Hobson graduated from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

So once again the fear of black men reeks through, all too apparently....black men get harrassed by local SB manager....black men have to deal with onsite police questioning....black men are detained and taken to be locally incarcerated ......ALL FOR A CORPORATE BLACK FEMALE (bedwench) to receive a promotion as though she has the means to bridge the racial gap that has been created.......not honor the black men from the incident by promoting a black man who can identify directly possibly with the victims and there plight ......but instead promote a “safe” “controllable” candidate that by skin color only, only superficially gives the appearance that SB recognizes the need for cultural change in its corporate ranks........pathetic.

Melody Hobson got Lucas to make that Redtails movie and donate money to black causes.

She ain’t a bedwench and has her own money, long paper.

NO
Just another corporate shill and feelgood hire to ease the blowback from their racist incident. If they were serious they could donte the black causes but I don’t see that happening. Nothing to see here, and as expected, small-minded matriarchs getting giddy over bullshyt. :russell:

:panthersafe:

I actually don't care that she's married to George Lucas; I felt obliged to add that since this is TLR. :francis:

Sounds like nothing but a title and a meaningless one
Clearly you've been a vice-chair many times before, I'm sure.:stephena1:
