The was race between Luis Abinader and Gonzalo Castillo who's running mate is the current VP of DR and wife of former president (and thief) Leonel Fernandez who was also running for office!!!

DR is corrupted AF. Hopefully Luis will take good care of the country..... Let see how this will go...

For someone that stopped closely following dominican politics a couple of years ago, this is confusing. What happened? Why did Leonel break with the PLD and how did they loose their ironclad grip on power?

As far as Abinader goes, isn't the PRM the successor of the PRD? If so, their track record isn't great. Basically, both PLD and PRD are thieves, but at least PLD were somewhat competent, while every PRD government ended in complete disaster (Guzman killing himself, Jorge Blanco going to jail and let's not even get into Hipolito Mejia, Baninter and Quirino Paulino).
