Lucas Matthysse (36-3, 34KOs) is still hoping to lure WBC/WBA 140-pound champion Danny Garcia back in the ring. Matthysse faced him in September 2013 as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez pay-per-view undercard.
It was a tough fight early on for the champion but the tide completely changed after Matthysse's right eye began to swell shut. From that point on, Garcia took over the contest and won a twelve round unanimous decision.
He expects Garcia to make a full move to welterweight after this Saturday's fight against IBF 140-pound champion Lamont Peterson. None of the belts are at stake - with the fight taking place at a catch-weight of 143-pounds. It is Garcia's second fight in a row which is being fought above the junior welterweight limit.
"If it was not for the eye, he would not have beaten me the last time. It's hard enough to fight with both eyes, then imagine only fighting with one. He is all about business now and fights without putting anything at stake... like his titles. Danny Garcia is dodging me. He felt my punch and doesn't want to have anything to do with me. I'm positive he is moving up and the [WBC] title will become vacant," Matthysse told reporters in Argentina.
On April 18th, Matthysse will get in the ring with former champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17KOs) in what many expect to be a 'Fight of The Year' frontrunner.
"It's a fight at the top level and he will be a tough opponent but I'm preparing well for this match," Matthysse said.
