The expectation is that quarterback Matthew Stafford will be with the Los Angeles Rams for the 2025 NFL season, but should contract talks go nowhere a backup plan is in the works.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Rams have given Stafford's agent permission to speak with other teams in order to gauge his value. The purpose? If a decision is made to deal the 37-year-old quarterback, an interested team would already have an idea of the length and dollar amount needed to extend him.

Allowing Stafford's side to discuss numbers with other teams would also give the Rams the parameters for what it would take to re-sign him — and also show the Super-Bowl winning QB how he is valued around the league. The inclination is that L.A. does not want to invest heavily and long term in an aging QB and is looking to boost the rosteraround its current young core, which explains why the Rams intend to trade wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

Per Over the Cap, Stafford is currently signed through the 2026 season with salary cap hits of $49.7 million and $53.7 million, respectively, over the next two seasons. He is also due a $4 million roster bonus in March.

Stafford is coming off his 16th NFL season and fourth with the Rams. He threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2024 with a 65.8 completion percentage.

In August, Stafford told the "Pardon My Take" podcast that despite getting up there in age he's not looking to retire anytime soon.

"I appreciate this game," Stafford said. "It's given me a ton. I hope I got three or four [seasons] left in me. We'll see. Every year's a new year. But I do feel good."

I don't see any reason why the Rams should not continue with Matt Stafford. He was better than the numbers would suggest and they matchup well with teams like the Lions and Eagles.
They'd like to have him back, but not at the asking price he's looking for hence them giving him permission to talk to other things.

If you think that type of offer is out there for you, then go out there and find it.

It’s better to get off a player a year early than a year late.

Trade Stafford, sign A-Rod, use the draft capital to get your QB of the future

Staff wants a reworked contract and the Rams already won their ring, they're not desperate enough to give a 37yo QB with tons of miles $100m guaranteed.

It's possible his agent sees what's out there and the numbers aren't far enough from what the Rams are offering and they just run it back - but if a team like the Giants or Raiders wants to offer a stupid amount then so be it.

Told Kracker Kupp they looking to trade him

Telling Stafford if he think the grass is greener go ahead and jump the fence then

Rams really don't give a fukk :mjlol:

Probably would have told Donald he was getting traded or cut had he stuck around long enough

McVay is the star of the team. Padford is replaceable
