If the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos were considered a battle of heavyweights on Sunday, then the Broncos would be Mike Tyson and the Texans, well, Evander Holyfield.
Early in the third quarter, Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was hit by Broncos linebacker Joe Mays, who viciously took him down. The hit was so hard that Schaub's helmet was ripped from his head ... along with part of his ear.
"I felt fine," Schaub told The Houston Chronicle. "Lost a piece of my ear."
Mays was penalized 15-yards for the hit. Schaub returned to the game and helped Houston hold off a late Denver comeback for a 31-25 win, giving the Texans their first 3-0 start in franchise history.
FOXSports.com's Mike Pereira, the former NFL head of officiating, thought the hit was cause for ejection.
"That shot by Mays on Schaub should be an ejection and should be a $50K fine. At least. That's vicious," Pereira tweeted.
