NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Entrepreneur and New Orleans native Percy “Master P” Miller says there should be no questions about funding for the city’s Walk of Fame.

Speaking to Fox 8 on Wednesday, Miller said he’s already put up $6.5 million for the project, which includes plans for 50 fleur-de-lis plaques, a museum, and documentary productions honoring recipients.

“No, why would there be [questions]? I funded the whole project,” Miller said. “This was all blown out of proportion.”

His comments come one day after representatives from Operation Restoration, the nonprofit managing the Walk of Fame, told city council members they were requesting a $500,000 grant from the Wisner Fund and considering asking honorees to pay $35,000 for their own plaque. The group also mentioned plans to seek $6.5 million in total funding

City council members expressed concerns about transparency, cost, and the selection process, particularly the idea of charging civil rights icons or local legends for their recognition.

Miller, whose own contributions helped fund the first plaques for Lil Wayne, Todd Graves, Leah Chase, and Avery Johnson in front of One Canal Place, said the project is already paid for.

He also clarified that nominations remain open to the public. According to the Walk of Fame website, anyone can submit a name for consideration, though the application requires a $250 non-refundable fee.

Beyond the Walk of Fame, Miller also gave updates on his role with the University of New Orleans basketball program. As President of Basketball Operations, he said the team is moving forward without four players suspended last year during a gambling investigation.

As a kid growing up, all I did was go to University of New Orleans games, and it changed my life,” Miller said. “I’m challenging the business people in our community—invest in us. Invest into the next generation, which is the University of New Orleans.”

Miller also expressed a desire to refurbish the Lakefront Arena, saying he wants the facility to match the quality of programs like McNeese State, which qualified for the NCAA Tournament this year.
