Earlier today, Latino Review revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel's other 2014 movie. Variety has now confirmed this rumour (adding further credibility to the initial claims) and says that the studio are indeed planning to release it on May 16th, 2014. They mention that their reason for travelling back in time from the 31st Century is to, "help to battle the Badoon, an evil alien race that attempts to conquer Earth's solar system." However, it is not made clear whether or not this is the exact direction in which the film will go, although it matches up with what we heard earlier today. Apparently, Marvel are very happy with the script written by Nicole Perlman, a relative unknown who came out of Disney's screenwriting program. Their sources also tell them that the studio has prioritized this over Black Panther, although Marvel Studios is also said to be working on Ant-Man, Dr. Strange and The Inhumans (as well as The Avengers 2 in 2015).

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter also claims to have heard from reliable sources that a Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con and reveal that, "Those in the know say the project is in line with Avengers in tone in the sense there is plenty of comedic elements on display." Nicole Perlman has written two drafts of the screenplay (she also impressed Marvel with a Black Widow solo script) and worked on Thor. Marvel is said to be on the hunt for a director.

This was the obvious next step. Unless people thought The Avengers were gonna beat Thanos alone. :rudy:

Yeah, true. But do you think that this film can be sucessful?

No, but I never thought "The Avengers" would be the #3 highest grossing movie of all time either. :russ:

It can be successful if they put Thanos in it and have some cameos from The Avengers....especially if this is leading up to "Avengers 2". People went to see movies like "Capt. America" and "Thor" just because they led up to "Avengers", and neither of those are very popular characters.

Those two characters are not very popular, but they are well known you know. Just saying. The guardians can be entertaining if they do include cameos like you suggested. We'll see.

Makes sense. Bringing in the Guardians is the only logical way the Avengers can stand up against Thanos. Otherwise, we'd probably get a weak version of Thanos.

Plus, it's an easy way to introduce Thanos without having to take up time in The Avengers sequel. Same way Loki was introduced in Thor.

Yep. Nobody knew any of the Marvel movies would be as successful as they turned out to be. At this point, Marvel knows what they're doing.

It's basically a team of random heroes that protect things on a cosmic scale....going to other planets, dimensions, times, etc.

Guardians of the Galaxy (1969 team) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Guardians of the Galaxy (2008 team) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They've fought Thanos a couple times, and Adam Warlock whupped his ass if I remember correctly. So these are the guys that are more on Thanos' level, as far as power. If the Avengers tried to fight Thanos dolo they'd get wrecked.
