RUMOR: LEGENDARY/UNIVERSAL’S SECRET PROJECT IS MARVEL’S NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER

18 MAY 2014 BY ANTHONY COUTO

New rumors suggest that Universal/Legendary’s recently announced “Untitled 2016 Event Project” might be a Namor the Sub-Mariner film -- Universal’s sole remaining Marvel Comics property.

According to Latino-Review, sources tell them Universal Pictures is co-financing withLegendary Pictures “a film that is new and not a sequel or remake, though it may be based on underlying intellectual property,” suggesting that said property is Namor the Sub-Mariner.

The site also points out that if Universal/Legendary released their Namor movie by their set November 2, 2016 release date, they would then beat Warner Bros.’ similarly nautical Aquaman to the big screen. Aquaman is rumored to play a major role in the Justice League movie, which is expected in theaters as soon as 2017.

Namor the Sub-Mariner.

In the source material, Namor made his debut in a promotional comic from April 1939 (pre-dating Batman by one month), called Motion Picture Funnies Weekly. Created by Bill Everett, Namor was the first Marvel superhero, and an early anti-hero in comics. He also sports wing-tipped boots like a true champion.

Universal obtained the film rights to Namor in the early ‘90s, when Marvel sold their characters to various film studios. When we asked Marvel Studios honcho Kevin Feigeif they now retained the rights to Namor, Feige said, “Namor I think is a little complicated, the way some of them are.”

Feige says this is “complicated” likely because Namor is classified as a mutant in the comics, and featured prominently in the Fantastic Four series (which would both fall under FOX territory). That being said, while the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are both mutants, they will appear in the mutant-less Avengers: Age of Ultron. “Complicated,” indeed!

Collider suggests that Max Borenstein, who scripted Godzilla for Legendary, might be writing the Namor script.

:ohhh: I thought the movie rights for Namor the Sub-Mariner reverted back to Marvel years ago.

:mjlol: at DC & Warner Bros. if a Namor the Sub-Mariner movie comes out before an Aquaman movie.

Universal needs to sell the rights to Namor to Fox or Sony or whoever so that the character can be a part of the Fantastic Four movie universe because on his own no connection to the greater Marvel U Namor is not very interesting.

I know right? Namor's supporting cast isn't all that great and most of his most memorable moments from the comics involve him interacting with characters (FF, Capt. America, The Hulk, Black Panther) he can't interact with now.

:mjlol: Bruh, I know absolutely NOTHING about Namor. The only reason I know of the character is because I remember him guest-starring in an episode of the 90's Fantastic Four animated series. So you're right.

Won't happen. James "the gawd" Cameron is about to crush building with Avatar 2 and the whole underwater setting and technology. A Namor movie would look like cheap imitation. Wouldn't be surprised if it's Mass Effect, Universal are also making a World of Warcraft movie.

This coming out first would have no effect on Aquaman. Both will do mediocre numbers:manny:Plus if you polled everyone that watches a comic book movie this summer, I doubt more than 10% have a decent idea of who Namor is. More people have heard about Aquaman through Entourage alone:manny:

If it really is in the works I bet Universel ends up unable to meet the deadline, just like what happened with Daredevil.

Making a movie about Namor before T'Challa huh :trollmj:

I always thought they should make a movie where the two go to war, Atlantis versus Wakanda would be epic and it isn't that far off given the bad blood between them in the comics.
