No diss to OP but I was listening to an interview with the director of Dope and he said something that I've been saying for years now: we gotta stop calling movies "black" and the reason he said it is because once we do, we automatically set limitations on the movie as far as who it's for. His example was any time a P Thomas Anderson movie comes out no one says "ooooh the new white movie for white people and I wonder what this will do for white American" no we just say "oh inherent vice looks dope" and leave it at that.
I can't think of anything more non white than a movie set in a barbershop. Cacs go to fukking stylists
That's all well and good in fantasy land but in reality we can't help but categorize. Why classify any movie as a white movie when they are the majority and primary consumers? Is kama sutra not referred to as indian movie? Or Gomorrah an italian one? There is nothing wrong with labelling a movie a black movie the real problem is that such actions scare away certain individuals. That's the real problem we should focus on, the why.. How many hetros watched brockback? Did whoever need to have penetrated ass to understand what was going on? Or did movie goers just view it as a lovestory? Ppl will make excuses for anythingNo diss to OP but I was listening to an interview with the director of Dope and he said something that I've been saying for years now: we gotta stop calling movies "black" and the reason he said it is because once we do, we automatically set limitations on the movie as far as who it's for. lol
That may be true..well not around PG county maryland, even white boys go to barbershops..but my point and his point is still the same. We dice our movies up too easily and limit their reach by giving them that label
Is it? That's what I'm saying and what he's saying. When I think of Ocean's 11, I don't think of it as a white movie..I think of it as a movie. When I think of the Godfather, I don't think of it as a white movie, I think of it as a movie.
I think you gave him the bad example.
Okay, lets see...Eddie Murphy....
Coming To America, with the whole black casts but nobody calls this "black" movie because everybody loves this film.
Boomerang with the whole black casts but nobody calls this "black" movie because everybody loves this film.
For some reason, it worked in 90s, it seems Eddie know the system and how it works back then but now he couldnt do it anymore cause he was actually wanted Tower Heist with the only black casts but the Hollywood wouldnt want that anymore. If Tower Heist was made in 90s and I believe it would have worked but in late 2010 wouldn't work anymore.
