Former world champion Marcos "El Chino" Maidana (35-5, 31KOs) is still relaxing and enjoying his time away from the ring, according to his close friend and manager Sebastian Contursi. There is a tentative return date being discussed of June 20th, but that is not set in stone.
Maidana has been away from the ring since the twelve round decision loss in his rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Chino has stayed very busy, staging three major fights from December 2013 to September 2014, and an obvious rest was needed.
"Maidana needs no less than three months in Oxnard, to return with the same fire as usual," Contursi said on the Ringside Radio show in Argentina. "Remember that he had ten very intense months of training and preparation. And we can also add in December 2013, where he had another high pressure fight and that was Adrien Broner. Following all of that, right now he wants to relax and detoxify after going through so many workouts and being away for so long from his family."
Maidana is also under contract with adviser Al Haymon, who is making waves in the sport with his recent television deals on NBC and Spike TV. Haymon advises over 160 fighters.
"He's the smartest man that I've met in my 20 years in boxing. And that includes none other than Bob Arum. We are satisfied with him and now it's a matter of waiting [to figure out our next move]," Contursi said.
One possible fight Contursi likes is a match with Danny Garcia (29-0, 17KOs), who is moving up to the welterweight division in the near future. Garcia faces Lamont Peterson at a catch-weight of 143-pounds on April 11th.
"It would be a great fight," said Contursi.
