John Jenkin, 24, of Newton Street, Millom has been given a life sentence and a hospital order to be served at Ashworth Hospital, Merseyside, with a minimum of 12 years.

Jenkin will be moved to a prison, if and when, he is cured of his condition, Preston Crown Court heard this evening.

Jenkin killed his sister so he could have sex with her, Preston Crown Court heard earlier today.

He revealed he planned to kill his mother two days before a gruesome attack which left his mother, his sister, and the family pet axed to death.

Jenkin was sentenced today after pleading guilty at a previous hearing to two counts of manslaughter relating to the killings of his mother Alice McMeekin, 58, and his 20-year-old sister Katie Jenkin.

In his opening Mr Tony Cross QC, prosecuting, told the court Jenkin had repeatedly spoken about killing 'my mam'.

Mr Cross told the court Jenkin approached a van driver near Millom pier on June 6 at around 7.30am. Jenkin dropped a bag and put his hands in the air in a 'surrender' motion and said: "I am armed but it's not in my hands."

He then said he planned to kill his mum and walked off.

The incident was reported to police.

Later that morning he was spotted acting erratically at Hodbarrow nature reserve. He had blood smeared across his forearms as a result of cutting himself with shells.

He was taken to Dane Garth in Barrow where he was seen by psychiatric staff. Jenkin told them he'd taken two tablets of LSD, half a bottle of whisky, and some cannabis.

Nurses said his risk of harm was low and he was released.

On the morning of June 8, Jack Lonergan, who lives next door, heard a 'ruckus' and later told police he heard a cry for help.

Michael Hannah spotted Jenkin leave the back door of the house before axing the dog to death and walking out of the back gate towards Millom pier where Jenkin later told police he planned to swim to Barrow to get help from his friends.

When police arrived they found the bodies of Katie Jenkin and Alice McMeekin with extremely severe head injuries.

A police officer described the scene as grisly. Mr Tony Cross, QC, prosecuting, said: "Sadly his (the police officer's) description did not overestimate the reality."

When police inspected the house they found heavy blood stains in the lounge and on the stairs.

Jenkin was spotted walking at Millom pier. He stripped naked and was reported crawling along the ground with a plastic pipe inserted into his backside.

Police were called and he was found with dirty toilet paper in his mouth - he was arrested before being taken to Furness General Hospital.

Jenkin reportedly told nurses he had 'lost control and killed them'.

He told police he had planned the night before to kill his mother. When, the next morning, he was attacking his mother with an axe, he was disturbed by his sister. He chased his sister and repeatedly hit her with the axe before raping her.

The dog began barking, and he then killed the dog.

In an interview with a doctor, Jenkin was asked for his motive for the killing.

The court was told: "He was talking about sexual fantasies. He said after I killed her I did some things. I had sex with her."

When asked if that was the reason he killed his sister, he said: "Yes."

In a report by psychiatrists read to the court Jenkin said God and the devil had spoken to him.

Jenkin said: "There is no sin that I need to remove. That meant I had to kill my mother and sister as they were holding me back from what I wanted to do. They said anything I could do would be ok.

"I thought of raping children. I raped her [his sister]. I was told to do something I wanted. It was something that came on that day."

The family of Alice and Katie released a statement saying: “The words don’t exist to describe our feelings of loss following the events which occurred in June last year. It has been a family tragedy on so many levels.

“Alice and Katie will always be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew them.

“We are grateful for all the help and support we have received, particularly from family, friends, and specially trained officers from Cumbria Police. Life for us will never be as it was and we would now ask to be left to come to terms with our loss.”

Speaking following the sentencing , Detective Chief Inspector Paul Duhig, senior investigating officer in the case, said: “This was a particularly tragic case, and the friends and family of Alice and Katie have been left devastated. Our thoughts continue to be with them. This case will have lasting effects on everyone involved.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the public who called the police when they spotted Jenkin acting suspiciously, which led to his quick arrest. This is typical of our local communities, who work closely with us to keep Cumbria one of the safest places to live in the country.

"Murders are exceptionally rare in Cumbria, however on the rare occasions when such a serious crime takes place we have a proven track record of bringing the culprit to justice and protecting the public.”
