A 17-year-old honors student who attended Flowers High School and had dreams of attending Harvard was killed during an apparent home invasion in Kettering.
The victim has been identified as Amber Stanley.
Gorman Brown, principal of Flower High School, says Stanley had grades and scores high enough for any college. Stanley was a star in the science magnet program and hoped one day to be a doctor.
She was without question the child who was going to lead us successfully into the 21st century, Gorman says.
Her friends talk glowingly about how they were starting an aspiring doctors program and she was right in the center of all that.
For reasons which remain a mystery, that bright light was extinguished Wednesday night. At about 10:30 p.m., a gunman kicked in the door to Stanley's home on Chartsey Street, went to Stanleys room and opened fire on the girl as she lay in her bed. She was hit multiple times.
The mother and the victim's two sisters were in the home at the time of the shooting, but escaped safely. Detectives have been canvassing the neighborhood, going through trash cans, mail boxes and man holes looking for a gun, ABC7 has learned.
Stanley's mother and older sister, obviously grief stricken, declined comment Thursday afternoon.
Neighbors and law enforcement sources say police were at the home last week for an issue involving Stanley's high school-age foster sister. That issue is among the things detectives are investigating but so far we're told there are no suspects, no motives, no explanation.
Neighbors say its terrifying.
