VELLORE: A 32-year-old man reportedly killed his wife by forcing her to consume concentrated acid in Vaniyambadi, Vellore, after she refused to ask her parents to give him more dowry. The Vaniyambadi police said S Srinivasan alias Sudhakar killed 22-year-old Gomathi on Monday night, with his mother and sister helping him commit the crime. Police are likely to charge Srinivasan, his mother and sister with murder as soon as they receive a complaint from Gomathi's family.
Srinivasan, 32, a small-time coir rope manufacturer, his mother Tamil Selvi and sister Kalpana constantly harassed his wife for money after he married her 11 months ago, a police officer said. Three months ago, Gomathi's parents learned that Srinivasan and his family were torturing their daughter for more dowry and gave him Rs 10,000, hoping that he would stop ill-treating her, the officer quoted the woman's relatives as saying.
Srinivasan and his family members on Monday night demanded that Gomathi ask her parents to give them more money. Srinivasan informed Gomathi's parents later that night that she had consumed poison and said he had admitted her to Vaniyambadi Government Hospital.
Duty doctors at the hospital discovered that Gomathi had consumed acid and referred her to Vellore Government Hospital after giving her first aid, the officer said. But Gomathi's parents took her to a private hospital in Krishnagiri instead.
"While being taken to the hospital in Krishnagiri, Gomathi told her aunt that her husband and his family forced her to consume acid," the officer said. "She said they decided to kill her after she refused to ask her parents to pay them Rs 2 lakh to expand their business."
Gomathi died of internal burn injuries in the hospital in Krishnagiri at 3pm on Tuesday. Police were informed about the death and took the body to Vaniyambadi Government Hospital for postmortem.
