Ok, so i have an artist that wants me to make a couple original beats to songs he made using other songs/instrumentals. Now, I can make a beat, ive made a couple for him already, but this shyt has me stumped. Ive tried 5 times and each time i came out with something good but it just doesnt fit what he made already. Has anyone ever done this before? Ive never heard of it, usually when major artists make songs is either beat first, or both working together, but ive NEVER heard of making a beat to a song thats already made. Maybe when people make beats to cover other tracks i guess, but the other issue is the songs he rapped over originally arent my style, idk if im just bytchin but this is givin me a headache.

Heres the one thats really giving me a headache

What do you mean? You mean he rapped over a song and he wants you to make something similar, yet different?

Edit: If it isn't your style don't mess with it.

You can practice the different styles and learn them gradually, but like paradime said, If it isn't your style it won't be done well. There are a ton of producers so you just have to find what fits you, Maybe there is a style you specialize in that is on common ground with the artist. You can't force yourself to do anything other than what you do.

I know exactly what you are saying OP, because I've had the mentality of this artist before, but ultimately, you just gotta tell him to stop being lazy and write new lyrics to the original beats you provide him with.

Well think of it as making a remix. You ever heard of people making beats to accapellas or remixing songs like this: https://soundcloud.com/russianboyz/russian-boyz-vs-lil-wayne-a
or this: https://soundcloud.com/scionav/bruiser-brigade-errthang-2

You essentially would have to come into making the song with the same type of attitude or concept as that.

Although, I'd have to add that if it's not really inspiring you or giving you ideas when you first listen to the "song", then it'd be difficult to make it sound good.
