The United Church of Christ caused a stir when its social-media associate wrote a post for the church’s blog recently that listed “10 ways you can actively reject your white privilege.”

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, founder and president of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, was horrified that a mainline Protestant church would post something like that online.

“It’s wrong for the church to be doing this,” Peterson told WND. “I mean, the church, and this church in particular, has become a secular church. It’s not about God. It’s not about love. It’s not about salvation. It’s not about forgiveness and overcoming sin. It’s about hating white people and making them feel guilty.”

In addition to being a UCC social media associate, Marchae Grair, who authored the post, is the editor of New Sacred, the UCC blog at which she published her post. She began thus:

“White privilege. It’s the phrase bigots hate to hear and progressives love to denounce.

“If you are white and clicked on this blog, [you are] to be congratulated for naming your privilege, you can stop reading in a few characters.”

Naming your privilege is a good starting point, Grair explained, but it’s insufficient – white people, even guilty white liberals, must actively reject their white privilege so as to “dismantle white supremacy.” Grair addressed her list of “10 ways you can actively reject your white privilege” to her “anti-racism allies.”

After giving her white allies nine tips on how to be sensitive toward people of color, Grair’s 10th and final tip reads, “Recognize that you’re still racist. No matter what.”

She explained: “White people always benefit from institutionalized racism, no matter how anti-racist your ideologies may be. You can’t disconnect yourself completely from the racism from which you benefit, and recognizing that is a large step in rejecting white privilege.”

Peterson, a black man and WND columnist, doesn’t know why white people keep trying to satisfy black activists like Grair.

“White people might as well stop trying to prove to black people that they’re not racist,” he advised. “The more you try to prove it to them the worse they’re going to become.”

Peterson, author of “The Antidote: Healing America from the Poison of Hate, Blame, and Victimhood,” pointed out that Grair is undermining her own fight against racism by accusing her white allies of being racist.

“I’ve said for a long time now that black people not only hate white conservative Republicans, but they also hate the white folks who are supposed to be supporting them,” Peterson said. “Because the one thing about hate – when you hate, you hate. You just don’t hate one person or one group; you hate everybody.”

David Kupelian, WND managing editor and author of “The Snapping of the American Mind: Healing a Nation Broken by a Lawless Government and Godless Culture,” called Grair’s blog post “so self-evidently stupid, it is unworthy of rebuttal.”

“The assertion by the United Church of Christ that all white people are racists, ‘no matter what,’ is just the latest insanity from this bastion of the progressive left disguised as a Christian church,” Kupelian continued.

He noted that the UCC once urged divestment from American companies doing business with Israel and demanded Israel tear down its anti-terror security fence. The church also supports same-sex marriage and brags on its website that it was the first Christian denomination to ordain an openly “gay” man. A transgender woman named Barbara Satin served on the UCC Executive Council and was recently appointed to President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Speaking of Obama, the UCC created controversy in 2007 when then-candidate Obama spoke at a couple of UCC gatherings, raising questions about whether the tax-exempt church was promoting Obama’s candidacy.

Kupelian believes left-wing churches like the UCC provide the left with a critical stepping stone.

“Truth be told, the growth of the very un-Christian radical left within the institutional Christian church is one of the biggest reasons the progressive left has been able to infiltrate, subvert and dominate so many other core institutions in America and the world,” he said.

Kupelian pointed to the words of Jesus in Luke 21:8: “See to it that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name.” He thinks far-left churches are deceiving people.

“Unfortunately, that’s exactly what we’re seeing today with absurd, harmful and manifestly un-Christian teaching and actions of the part of the United Church of Christ and other so-called mainline denominations that, with every passing year, bear less and less resemblance to a true church of Christ,” he said.

Carl Gallups, a Baptist pastor and radio talk-show host, agreed the UCC is off base with its views on racism and white privilege.

“I have news for the UCC: All people, no matter the color, are born in sin and are desperately lost in a sin nature unless they are born again (Rom. 3:23, Rom. 6:23),” Gallups said. “Racism is an inherent element in all mankind and has been a scourge upon the nations from the very beginning.

“All people have trouble with various prejudices and bigotry and, at least, tinges of racism. If you say you don’t, you are lying to yourself – but you are not fooling the rest of us.”

Gallups, author of “Be Thou Prepared,” urges the UCC to focus on the gospel of Christ rather than the secular doctrine of “white privilege.”

“It would be wonderful if the UCC would immerse itself in holding out the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ instead of making blatantly racist declarations like, ‘all white people are racists,’ and thus nullifying their argument by proving their own ridiculous brand of inherent racism – against all white people,” the pastor said. “They condemn themselves with their own words. The hypocrisy is astounding.”

Gallups noted the foolishness of the fourth item of Grair’s list: “Never invite people of color to the table for the sake of claiming diversity.”

“So if you purposely DON’T invite people of color to your table – you are a racist,” Gallups presumed. “If you DO invite people of color to your table in an attempt to not be seen as a racist – you are a racist.

“But if you simply invite someone of color to your table because you are not racist and you truly want that person at your table, how will anyone know your real heart in the matter? Who’s the judge? How can a mere mortal make that judgment? Is the UCC going to play the part of thought police? Ridiculous.”

It seems to be a no-win situation for white people in the United Church of Christ – the same denomination that counted the Rev. Jeremiah Wright among its pastors and the same denomination Obama attended for many years.

In fact, Peterson thinks the UCC is no church for white people.

“I would highly recommend that white people totally turn away from that church or any kind of church that is accusing them of something that they’re not guilty of,” Peterson declared. “If anything, the church has a responsibility to encourage each individual to look at their own hearts and overcome their own anger rather than pointing the finger toward someone else, and as long as the church is pointing at white people, blacks are only going to get worse rather than getting better.”
