Wow. I'm surprised there's no appreciation thread for this album.

Anyway, this album is one of the rare hip hop albums I consider classic even though I only love 5 tracks: "Accordion", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "All Caps", "Fancy Clown" and "Strange Ways".

the rest of it is too weird and abstract for me. It's not bad stuff but just not me. Doesn't have much of a groove for me to settle into. Not pleasant to my ear. I couldn't put this album on and let it ride. I'd skip tracks.

But those 5 tracks alone....holy shyt. You had to have been there when this stuff came out. I remember my college buddy spazzing the fukk out over this. And I heard some tracks like "Raid" and "All Caps". I thought it was the wackest shyt ever. I would laugh with my brother about how wack this new underground rapper was.

Then I checked out "Accordion" and the rest was history. Completely changed my perspective on how I looked at hip hop.

I always call it MF Dooms underground mainstream album.

When this came out many dudes I didnt expect to know about Doom was talking about him all of a sudden.

Gave me hope for a second that MF Doom would become way more popular than he is.

Someday.... :wow:

Appreciated! Like @SirBiatch I actually was only a fan of about half of it at first. It really grew on me. One day it just kinda clicked. I think the album is really influential. It's like a Blueprint type album for underground albums.

Favorite joints are

Accordion
Fancy Clown
Strange Ways
Rhinestone Cowboy
Figaro
All Caps
Operation Lifesaver
America's Most Blunted
Eye
Supervillain Theme
Sickfit

In before the haters show up.

Dope album.

I was late with DOOM. I first really started paying attention to him on that 'Rock Co kane flow' joint with De La.

Than I copped Mouse and the Mask and then Madvillainy.

Then it was a wrap. Got all the albums.

'It's like making a soldier drop his weapon....shooting him.....and telling him to get to stepping' :krs:

Dude has quotables for years.

this album is crazy.

Honestly, I cant even begin to talk about how crazy this album is. I started thinking about it, my mind just sorta shut down. I don't know where to begin. :dwillhuh:

For real. DOOM's rhymes? Giving yall nothing but the lick like two broads? Oh my aching hands.... from raking in grands? And breaking in mic stands? It's ugleh... like "Lookit you!?" It's a damn shame? On one scarey night, I saw the light? Heard a voice that sound like Barry White say "Sho ya riiight"? Dude got a song about meeting women in the club and they got bad breath. AND IT WORKS.

Madlib on the beats, sampling every fukking thing? Street fighter with Vincent Price laughing? Straight Stevie Wonder instrumentals? I remember the first time I heard the album, I was already fukked up by the Accordian beat.... that MadVillain Bed and Breakfast Cafe Lounge byt the Water beat came on.... it wasn't the beat that got me... it was DOOM introduced MadLib and that "How do you do?" started playing through different speakers! Then there was songs with no rapping on it, shyt FIT SEAMLESSLY!

That crazy all R&B interlude from that girl you never heard from again, shyt sounded like something you'd hear on some underground college station or some WGCI megamix in the 90s when you just came in at 3 in the morning, and you in the basement and too fukked up to stand? Then you realize you're listing to some AM station and not FM? WTF how- what was that song doing there!?

Songs with no hooks? dude just... flowing his ass off?

Dude (I didn't know at the time) rapping about his girl being stole.... BY HIMSELF!?

Dude was rapping over a fukking 3/4 beat!? (is that a 3/4 beat? I say yes, but hell if I know?) (the jar is under the bed. )

This album, brehs. this album. :banderas:

IDK if I'm the only one, but I can only enjoy Doom when he's doing collab albums.

And yes, this shyt is a classic to me just because of accordion and strange ways alone.
