French President announces possibility of debt cancellation for African countries
French President Macron on Monday opens possibility of cancelling debt for some African countries and extends lockdown.

By Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed French citizens on coronavirus and confinement measures on Monday. In that address, he announced the possibility of canceling the debt of African countries to assist them in their fight against the Covid-19 virus.

The French President made this statement toward the end of his speech during which he extended lockdown measures in the country till 11 May. He also called for unity in the fight against the virus. The world is at a “moment of truth”, he said, and it is our “responsibility to build new forms of solidarity and cooperation.”

Turning his thoughts towards Africa, he said: “We must also know how to help our African neighbours fight the virus more effectively. We must help them economically too by canceling their debts.”

Pope Francis’ call
During his Urbi et orbi blessing on the occasion of Easter Sunday on 12 April, Pope Francis appealed for international sanctions to be relaxed in the light of the present circumstances caused by the pandemic. Noting that vulnerable people tend to be abandoned, Pope Francis made this call so that the countries on which sanctions have been imposed would be able to “provide adequate support to their citizens.” The Pope also reminded the world that this is not the time for indifference, self-centeredness or division.

“May all nations be put in a position to meet the greatest needs of the moment through the reduction, if not the forgiveness, of the debt burdening the balance sheets of the poorest nations,” Pope Francis said.

Coronavirus
France has been the third country most affected by the coronavirus in Europe, after Italy and Spain. There have been 136,779 confirmed cases with over 14,000 deaths and 35,435 recovered patients. Since 17 March, the French population has been asked to stay home as a precautionary measure against the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The lockdown was originally scheduled to end on 14 April.

I wonder if this a chess move to woo countries away from China now that it's stigmatizing blacks.

I'm speculating that they basically offering a carrot to West Africa. A tainted one that increases their power back before China, Russia, and Iran having a presence on the continent.

DING DING

I always said the next world wide proxy will be the Motherland. China got in but now the west can use this virus and the worlds economic down turn as animus against China. Africa STILL has a ton of resources, STILL has absurd amounts of land, STILL has a gang of cheap labor too. Better to get these countries down asap before they fall too deep in China's pockets and the whole continent becomes China's colonies basically. Cuz if that happens you can kiss the worldwide free market goodbye.

If I had to provide a hot take for this move, I'd say that considering both the progressive loss of its grip over francophone West Africa & China/Africa unstable but deep relationship, France is trying to take advantage of the latter to fix the first with a more cooperative approach.

Of course, it's just words as of now and cannot be taken as an indication of a global change in strategy, but still: the massive write off of debt would be an extremely good thing. That is exactly the kind of Western internal conflict that turning to China for business helped produce: they're seeing that they're progressively losing favors and have to adapt.

As long as it benefits Africa :ehh: write off the debt breh.

It’s a chess move for France.
Francophone African countries have be vocal in recent years on how France has kept their economies from growing for some time. France is weakened spot and right now they want to keep the cash cow going and taking advantage at the vitriol that African governments have on China to swoop in like Superman and polish their image.

If what he says does happen and African leaders are smart, they would take advantage of this situation and do what they have always should have done and that’s open Francophone African countries to open market and get rid of the French chokehold on their economies.

Yeah this is definitely a chess move.

All those anti-black stories coming out of china are spreading on Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, etc twitter. So Africans are definitely gonna sour on the chinese... but throwing in with the french is ehh..

seeing more on Africa twitter talking about stopping relying on foreigners. :wow:

Now I imagine france might get a little power increase, but nothing substantial for them coming from this. Those movements that want the french out ain't going anywhere
