I just started reading The Prince, and the irony is that the damn book was written as a gift to a politician

In 1513, the Medici accused him of conspiracy against the Medici family and had him imprisoned. Despite having been subjected to torture ("with the rope," where the prisoner is hanged from his bound wrists, from the back, forcing the arms to bear the body's weight, thus dislocating the shoulders), he denied involvement and was released after three weeks.
Damn he was writing to a Medici? Those motherfukkers were vicious. I guess mayyybe he gets a pass...
Right, but he was basically telling the Prince he was writing to to stop fukking up, and do shyt right. He had been exiled prior to and withstood torture.

far from a bytch
Still, the fact that he wishes "great fortune" on a prince who had him tortured is questionable

Yeah there's a lot if different interpretations of The Prince. Some think Machiavelli was really a Republican, and was satirizing Monarchy. Others think he was a Republican who recognized that small republics could not withstand the threat from the more powerful continental monarchies, and therefore had to emulate them in order to survive. Still others think he was just a ruthless monarchist. Its difficult to tell. Whats clear is several future influential rulers used his teachings.Damn he was writing to a Medici?
