Several gunshots were fired at a car belonging to University of Memphis wide receiver Jae'Lon Oglesby on Tuesday night, according to a police report.
Oglesby told police that he was sitting in his apartment in the 600 block of Patterson Street at around 10 p.m. Tuesday when he heard several shots outside. He noticed bullet holes in two windows and both of the passenger-side doors of his Nissan Altima, as well as bullet damage to the roof of the car. While he did not see who fired the shots, Oglesby told police that he had a physical altercation with cornerback Kam Prewitt earlier in the day.
"We are aware of the incident involving two student-athletes on the University of Memphis campus yesterday and are cooperating fully with the investigation," athletic director Tom Bowen said in a statement. "All student-athletes are subject to the University of Memphis Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, as well as University and athletic department policies.
"In addition, we are monitoring a second situation involving shots fired at a student-athlete’s parked vehicle at an off-campus location. We have offered our full support to the local authorities investigating that incident."
Coach Mike Norvell said after practice Wednesday morning that he and Bowen were collecting more information about the incident and would make a decision about the players' status with the team.
"We'll talk about that," Norvell said. "We're in the evaluation stage of everything that has happened. So we'll address that here at a future time."
Oglesby, a sophomore from Central, South Carolina, originally committed to Clemson out of high school before spending a year at Fork Union Military Academy. A four-star recruit, he had 20 catches for 167 yards and a touchdown last season.
Prewitt, a redshirt freshman from Pinson, Alabama, has yet to appear in a game at Memphis. He was suspended during fall camp by Norvell for an undisclosed reason.
Neither Oglesby nor Prewitt were present at practice Wednesday.
