I think they've had similar careers. Worked their way up through Hollywood as writers, started out directing low budget films, made an absolute smash in 1999 with highly successful and influential films, had heavy expectations after that, made films that were underappreciated at the time but have since gained a loyal fanbase, made films with a lot of hype that didn't meet expectations and also made absolute flops. I agree, I don't think they have made anything completely terrible although I haven't seen the nee Matrix movie. M. Night has The Happening and After Earth on his resume which are both terrible. Heard bad things about The Last Air Bender to but I haven't seen it.

It's got prime Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly in it...its worth a watch regardless

New Matrix I can see how people won't like it, but even that's far from terrible
