Lupita Nyongโ€™o is addressing why she walked away from Gina Prince-Bythewoodโ€™s โ€œThe Woman Kingโ€ back in 2020.

Nyongโ€™o, who leads the upcoming Marvel tentpole โ€œBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever,โ€ told The Hollywood Reporter that she was set to play an Agojie warrior in the historical epic starring Viola Davis, who also produces. The Agojie tribe inspired the fictional Dora Milaje female army in โ€œBlack Panther.โ€

After being cast in โ€œThe Woman King,โ€ Nyongโ€™o made a short documentary on the Agojie tribe called โ€œWarrior Women With Lupita Nyongโ€™o.โ€ Per THR, the Academy Award winner โ€œgrapples uncomfortably with the tribeโ€™s legacy of violenceโ€ in the short. Ultimately, Nyongโ€™o exited โ€œThe Woman Kingโ€ following the documentary.

โ€œIt was very amicable, the departure from it,โ€ Nyongโ€™o said, declining to discuss specifics. โ€œBut I felt it wasnโ€™t the role for me to play.โ€

Upon release, โ€œThe Woman Kingโ€ faced internet backlash, with the hashtag #BoycottWomanKing trending on Twitter due to the Agojie tribe and Kingdom of Dahomey participating in the European slave trade. The film centers on Davisโ€™ General Nanisca, who tries to convince the king (John Boyega) to stop participating in the slave trade.
