Lupita Nyongโo is addressing why she walked away from Gina Prince-Bythewoodโs โThe Woman Kingโ back in 2020.
Nyongโo, who leads the upcoming Marvel tentpole โBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever,โ told The Hollywood Reporter that she was set to play an Agojie warrior in the historical epic starring Viola Davis, who also produces. The Agojie tribe inspired the fictional Dora Milaje female army in โBlack Panther.โ
After being cast in โThe Woman King,โ Nyongโo made a short documentary on the Agojie tribe called โWarrior Women With Lupita Nyongโo.โ Per THR, the Academy Award winner โgrapples uncomfortably with the tribeโs legacy of violenceโ in the short. Ultimately, Nyongโo exited โThe Woman Kingโ following the documentary.
โIt was very amicable, the departure from it,โ Nyongโo said, declining to discuss specifics. โBut I felt it wasnโt the role for me to play.โ
Upon release, โThe Woman Kingโ faced internet backlash, with the hashtag #BoycottWomanKing trending on Twitter due to the Agojie tribe and Kingdom of Dahomey participating in the European slave trade. The film centers on Davisโ General Nanisca, who tries to convince the king (John Boyega) to stop participating in the slave trade.
