Omar Sy stars in Netflix's French series 'Lupin'
The streamer projects 70 million subscribers will have viewed the original series over its first 28 days.
Ahead of its fourth-quarter results later on Tuesday, global streaming giant Netflix said original series
Lupin, starring Omar Sy, has become "our biggest French hit."
The company, led by co-CEOs Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos, is forecasting that the crime drama, which debuted on the service on Friday, would be viewed by 70 million subscribers within its first 28 days.
It has "already ranked no. 1 in the top 10 in dozens of countries, including Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden and many more," the company said.
Created by George Kay, the show is inspired by the popular novels by Maurice Leblanc about gentleman thief and master of disguise Arsène Lupin. Sy plays as Assane Diop who recreates some of his hero Lupin's heists. The drama also features Ludivine Sagnier (
The New Pope), Clotilde Hesme (
Chocolat), and Nicole Garcia (
Who You Think I Am).
"Since the release of the series, the original Maurice Leblanc book has regained interest internationally 114 years after it's first release, with it now trending on many marketplaces in France, Italy, Spain, the U.S., the U.K., Korea and others," Netflix also said.
After Tuesday's market close, Netflix will unveil its latest quarterly subscriber and financial results and provide forecasts for the current year. Its earnings updates also traditionally include commentary about the performance of key originals.
