My top songs:
1a) Strange Fruition
1b) Hood Now
3) Form Follows Function
The rest don't really matter.
If you took my 3 songs, and removed them from the album. What are you left with? You can see a SEVERE musical drop off between the composition of these 3 songs and the rest of the album.
This is not to say I don't like lambo angels or bytch bad. I actually really rock with lambo angels because of its connection to Enemy of the State (which I loved btw).
But I'm looking at this from a musical perspective. Do I love the lyrics, absolutely. Do I love the message, absolutely. But again, take those 3 songs, listen to them back to back to back. Then go listen to "Put em Up." Like, the shyt doesn't mix.
I feel like I'm being tricked by the beats on the rest of the album. For example, "heart donor" has a horrible hook. BUT. That beat hits and you find yourself nodding and cruising hard while cursing at the fukkn donor part. Lupe, you ain't need to trick me b. Half the time I'm confused and asking myself, "Do I like the song? Or do I like the drums that the lyrics are attached to?" And as a person that loves listening to ignorant ass trap music, I've never once thought that.
Oh and I do find myself confused by the story in "Bad bytch." Personally I feel like Lupe has the characters confused. To me I'd think the better story is the girl following her mother/sisters/cousins saying they're bad bytches. And boys around the computer and or king magazines looking at bad bytches.
But I've come to the realization that Lupe is an international rapper. He does songs for more than just my ilk. So I have to deal with songs like "Unforgivable Youth" that will be adored overseas. Eh.....
But I bought the album and supported!!!!
