the American prison industrial complex is a monster.
up until just recently in New York state, prisoners where counted as part
of the population of the county the prison was located. therefore federal
and state funding to schools, roads, etc. was unfairly distributed to places
that had prisons and taken away from where the prisoners lived prior.
jobs generated by the prisons guarantee local support for the prisons continued, perverse existence.
