Kenneth Branagh Directing Artemis Fowl Movie

Kenneth Branagh scored a big hit earlier this year with Cinderella, and while back in June we reported that he had signed on to adapt Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, it now looks like he’s turning his attention to YA-fare.

According to Variety and The Tracking Board, Branagh has signed on to direct an adaptation of the YA novel Artemis Fowl with playwright Conor McPherson writing the script.

There are eight books in theArtemis Fowl series, so this could be a huge franchise for Disney if Branagh pulls it off. It could also carve out its own niche in the YA landscape since Artemis is more of an anti-hero rather than a “golly, gee-whiz” type young protagonist, which could offer some nice variety. And from a fantasy perspective, it would be interesting to see how Branagh approaches the material. Does he go more lush-medieval like he did with Asgard in Thor and the general design of Cinderella, or does he try something different?

Producer Harvey Weinstein said back in 2013 about the project [via CS], “This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old.”

Variety reports that Branagh is still attached to Murder on the Orient Express, so it’s possible that film could go before cameras while McPherson hammers out the script for Artemis Fowl.

Same guy that directed Thor:lupe: this shyt could be piff:ohhh:. I read the books in elementary and middle school, so I'm excited to see these on screen:whew:

Is the YA novel series adaptation really that successful nowadays? Harry Potter was a no brainer. Has any series come close to replicating the success of Twilight and The Hunger Games? The Narnia films(which are technically children's books) surprisingly broke a billion through their first three, but I don't see sales for those getting better when/if they get back to making those movies. There are a bunch of series that don't get past the first or second entry. Even the self contained YA novels have been very hit or miss

Nope. Maze Runner seems like it’s got momentum but then again so did Divergent...

Like you said it’s pretty hit and miss. You get hits like HP and Twilight but then you get duds like Percy Jackson, The 5th Wave and Enders Game.

Never watched the movies or read the books, came off as a Hunger Games knockoff and the Hunger Games started cool and ended flat so I said fukk that. I keep seeing peoplensay stuff like "Divergent....." and when I googled whats the deal I saw that they're tryna turn the series into a TV Show without the main girl? Can you explain to me what happened to the franchise

Basically, the third film bombed so instead of making a fourth the producers decided to turn it into a TV series. Only they didn't tell Shailene Woodley (the star of the series ) and she ended up learning about it on the red carpet during some event :russ:

She backed out of it a year ago and its been in limbo since then.

this series is more in the vein of percy jackson than the dystopian future ones.

it's success hinges on whether the script and director respect the source material and tap into the tone of the books succesfully. Percy jackson should have been big, but they treated it like a quick cash grab, hopefully they don't do the same here:beli:

Blows my mind they fukked up on Percy Jackson. That series should've been printing money. Matter of fact, the author wrote a follow up to the series that went 5 books that was more YA than MG, shyt could've still been printing money. Those a$$holes really negged a Percy/Aries fight scene in favor of some faux pas Percy/Luke splash battle :scust:
