So I'm really trying to learn everything I can, as far as "beat making". Id like to think for only doing this for 8-9 months, and recently not even going that hard, Im pretty decent. Ive completed maybe 30 beats since Ive started.

With all that aside, I suck at basslines, ect. My sample chops are always dope, and id like to think my drums are solid as well.

So basically, Im looking to learn some tips, and maybe even help someone else learn with me, through this thread. Any help is appreciated.

The key to Bass-lines is that you need to have room in the lower frequency range. Filtering the low frequency on a sample and equing a low frequency on a sample, will give you the needed room, then the overall instrumental will have a fuller sound.

Yeah I was reading on this a few days ago. I haven't gotten the chance to try this yet, but probably will sit down tonight and try it that way.

I think that sums me up too. I do make my own basslines sometimes but more often than not I stick to the low end theory.

"Keep it simple stupid"

I've been following your beats and you have good ideas. But in my opinion a lot of your production tends to be chaotic because of unnecessary drum and melody switches.

Take this track for example

This beat starts out nice and smooth but about half way in the track starts to get unpredictable. The kick is consistent but the snare is a little wild. You have good sample chops; problem is you don't stay with a particular groove long enough. This would be fine if you're just trying to make instrumental albums. But you'll want to simplify the track if you want rappers using your work. This beat sounds like a mash up of different ideas you had while you were making this. I don't know where the chorus or verses are on this track. You'd be better served posting complete beats with their natural progression. This will make it easier for rappers to envision how they could flow on your tracks.

But this is just my opinion. Others might feel a different way.

I agree with you 100%. And I feel a lot of the switching up comes from me being to picky. I zone out and forgot that there will be vocals over it, and when I listen to it I feel like it gets to repetitive and force a switch up. I guess I'm forgetting what a beat is for. I really appreciate your feedback fam.

So, I'm not sure if this will help or make sense but I'ma see what I can do.

I like to think of the bass line in a hip-hop cut as a concurrent melody - it's got a life of its own but still is in sync with the higher frequency "main" melody in this way: it maintains in the same key and notes in the harmonic chord progressions. It's like a "loose" counterpoint (for those familiar with the music theory term) but obviously an octave or more lower.

Less is more with a bassline. It needs to feed off the kick an add funk, bounce or drama to the beat.

Use it to sparingly fill gaps in the beat.

Edit: for instance, peep the bass hits a simple single note on the 1 of the beat, and then right before it loops it does a simple little doo, doo, doo, doo.

shyt sound right though, less is more :kush:
