In a group of new upcoming stars you always need that one grizzled veteran to clash against them. Crazy Bob Backlund was a perfect foil of the “new generation” concept so putting the belt on him for a transition run made sense so new guys like Bret, Diesel and etc can give his old ass his comeuppance.
His title win was *literally* the most angry I have ever been in wrestling history. His promo after survivor series still makes me

Real shyt, that whole heel run was fukking FLAMES. He didn’t even need the title dude was HATED before that. The title win against Bret at that time was just icing on the cake for this heel run. Real WWF fans know this shyt was GOLD.
