Lomachenko’s Manager: No Easy Route, Toughest Foes Next
Posted by: David P. Greisman on 8/1/2014 .

by David P. Greisman

Vasyl Lomachenko was fast out of the gate once his pro career started in earnest, his six World Series of Boxing bouts not withstanding. He started off with a fourth-round knockout of 25-3 Jose Ramirez, then proceeded directly to a title fight against Orlando Salido.

Salido came in overweight, got away with plenty of low blows and still was only able to beat Lomachenko by split decision. Lomachenko went on to win a world title this past June, when the two-time Olympic gold medalist topped Gary Russell Jr. by majority decision.

Lomachenko’s next fight hasn’t been set. His manager, Egis Klimas, says promoter Top Rank will be speaking with HBO about Lomachenko this coming weekend.

Klimas says there’s no mandatory defense of Lomachenko’s World Boxing Organization title due, but that doesn’t mean they want the next voluntary defense to come against someone ranked too low.

“My opinion and his opinion would be to take a No. 1,” Klimas said. “Let him fight the No. 1. He wants to fight the toughest. He doesn’t want to go the easy route. So if it’s a free defense, we don’t want to pick from the other end and pick No. 15. Why don’t we pick a No. 1? If No. 1 is not available, go to No. 2, No. 3, No. 4. Give these guys a chance.”

The WBO rankings have Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo of Thailand (51-1 with 33 KOs, the loss coming to then-titleholder Chris John in 2012) at No. 1. He’s followed by Abner Mares at No. 2, Gamaleir Rodriguez (24-2-3 with 13 KOs and coming off a decision over Orlando Cruz) at No. 3, then Marvin Sonsona at No. 4.

Loma vs Abner Mares?:ohhh: That's a great fight:wow:

I might actually become a fan of Loma too:blessed:

He has no fear of fighting the best...a true throwback fighter. Him and RiGOAT are representing well for former Olympians in the lower weights:obama:

i maybe wrong on this who knows but i see an early career burnout for loma...something on the level of david reid

David Reid did mess up his eye against Trinidad, but I see how you can draw the comparision though:obama:

I dont see Loma like Rigo who's excellent defensively, so it will take 1 hell of a performance to beat him. Loma is easier to hit and hopefully he doesnt get a Reid vs Trinidad type of performace by seeking out the Mares and Donaire's of the weight class, but I do like the willingness to face only the top notch competition

In an era where champions are out here fighting nikkas that aren't even ranked how can anyone hate on the gawd :banderas:

#Novallinamidgets

It doesn't hurt that he is cool with one of the GOAT wrestlers Jordan Burroughs :whew:

USA Wrestling :blessed:

Wow nice comparison. Yeah they f*cked up putting Reid in with Tito but he was already starting to look bad in his fights before that. Definitely burnout.

i liked reid..droopy eye and all...he still accomplished a whole lot though..champ with some defenses...with him there was a fine line with good and bad matchmaking..his eye wasnt going to let him have a long career so his handlers had to get him his money quick and cash out...he cashed out against prime tito and paid a price...loma doesn't have a handicap like that but 126-130 are not the best divisions to be matched tough without being brought up correctly..i maybe wrong but we'll see

Seems like Loma may not care though. His career appears to not be about longetivity, but just about fighting the best right now and seeing what happens. :salute:
This is something that would piss off a lot of managers because they want you to have a long profitable career, with some key fights spread throughout.
Loma looks like he just wants to schedule top tiered fighters and cement his reputation without all the buildup fights that can take years off his career.

So I guess unification is out of the question? :dwillhuh: (although, for the record, I wouldn't favor him over any of them currently)

1. Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo EASY WORK
2. Abner Mares GREAT FIGHT, Loma more skilled, Mares more experienced
3. Gamalier Rodriguez EASY WORK
4. Marvin Sonsona GREAT FIGHT, Both young, strong and hungry
5. Kamil Laszczyk EASY WORK
6. Gary Russell, Jr. NO IMMEDIATE REMATCH NECESSARY
7. Lee Selby GREAT FIGHT, but already has an October date VS. #10
8. Matias C. Adrian Rueda EASY WORK
9. Hisashi Amagasa GREAT FIGHT, his size could cause anyone in the division problems
10. Joel Brunker IF HE UPSETS #7 SELBY WE CAN TALK......
11. Rocky Juarez UPSET ALERT! UPSET ALERT! UPSET ALERT!
12. Marco McCullough EASY WORK
13. Jayson Velez EASY WORK
14. Mark Gil Melligen EASY WORK
15. Jessie Cris Rosales EASY WORK

I would favor Marvin Sonson over Loma and Mares:youngsabo:

I think he's the truth.

the 126 division is poppin nowadays...

i remember reading something saying Loma's promoter Klimas wouldn't be opposed to a tourney....which would be dope so many good matchups to be made
